How to record calls

Recording phone calls with Echo depends on your device and iOS capabilities.

Using iOS call recording

On devices running iOS 18.1 or later, Apple provides native call recording in certain regions.

If this feature is available:

  • Record the call using your iPhone’s built-in call recording

  • Save the recording

  • Upload or import it into Echo

  • Tap Generate Notes to create a transcript and summary

This is the most reliable way to record and transcribe calls.

Important limitations

Echo cannot directly record a live phone call on the same iPhone using the microphone.

This is because iOS does not allow third-party apps to access the microphone during an active call. The microphone is controlled by the Phone app, which prevents Echo from recording the audio reliably.

Using speaker mode on the same device will also not work reliably.

Using a second device

If native call recording is not available in your region, you can use a second device.

  • Take the call on your phone

  • Turn on speaker mode

  • Use another device (phone, tablet, etc.) with Echo to record

  • Generate notes after the call

Inside Echo

In the app, the Record a Call option provides a short guide to help you follow these steps.
